How to make your own CBD Coffee

What is CBD Coffee?

CBD Coffee‘ or ‘CBD-Infused Coffee’ is the generally accepted name for a cup of coffee with added CBD or hemp extract. If you are now wondering why anyone would consume CBD and coffee at the same time, you may want to check out “The science behind CBD Coffee” first.

I first started exploring the benefits of mixing CBD and coffee in 2017. I love coffee. It’s warm, comforting, and while they once were heavily debated, coffee has finally secured some health benefits amongst scientists. Pairing it with hemp extract allowed me to easily integrate CBD and other cannabinoids into my life,

It is so ingrained in many of our daily morning (and afternoon) rituals that it makes the perfect habit to infuse with CBD. What’s more is that it can be done so, very easily.

How to Make CBD Coffee:

The three most popular ways to make CBD Coffee at home are:

  1. Using CBD infused coffee beans
  2. Adding CBD oil or drops to coffee
  3. Adding CBD honey to coffee

Each method has its pros and cons, but they are all easy to make at home. We explore each below.

1. CBD Infused Coffee Beans

Using CBD infused coffee beans is perhaps the easiest way to make a CBD coffee at home. Our coffee beans come pre-infused with CBD-rich, organic hemp extract. You do not need to add or infuse anything yourself. The freshly roasted beans are ready to brew straight away; be it a filter machine, espresso machine or our personal favourite, the french press.

How are the coffee beans infused with CBD? Coffee beans produce their own natural oils – in fact if you ever get a stomach ache from drinking too much coffee, it is because of the oils. Anyway, we make use of the beans natural oils to infuse them with organic hemp extract. This means our beans are in fact infused with full spectrum hemp extract, offering you a wide variety of cannabinoids, terpenes, minerals and nutrients.

How does CBD coffee taste? Users often expect CBD coffee to taste very ‘hempy or planty’ but that is not the case. If the manufacturer is using a high quality hemp and the correct infusion process, the taste of the coffee itself is not negatively impacted. You may notice a slight hemp aroma to the beans but the taste will not be too different to your regular cup of coffee.

How to Brew CBD Coffee Beans:

  1. Add 10-15g of ground CBD coffee per cup to your cafetiere / french press.
  2. Then, measure and add just enough near boiling water, stir and wait 3-4 minutes.
  3. Finally push the strainer / plunger down gently, and pour yourself a cup of coffee full of CBD-rich hemp extract.

  • You already know how to make coffee and you likely drink it most days.
  • If you don’t know or drink coffee and you want to try, all you need is a french press / cafetiere.
  • It is still cheaper than a cup of coffee at {insert your local coffee chain here}.

  • You might not like coffee (hard to believe if you have come this far…)
  • It is hard to increase the CBD dosage per cup without ending up with a really strong cup of coffee.

2. Adding CBD Oil to Coffee

This can be as simple as adding a few drops to your pre-made coffee, or if you like the idea of a CBD butter coffee, it can be a little more complex. The simplest way, which is now quite common, is to just add a few drops of CBD oil to your coffee. The amount of drops will depend on the strength of your CBD oil, but depending on why you are taking CBD, we recommend between 5-15mg of CBD per cup.

CBD Coffee Drops

  • Very easy to control dosage
  • CBD oil and water soluble solutions are versatile ingredients and can be used to ‘infuse’ other drinks and foods.
  • Can be blended to produce a CBD ‘BulletProof’ Coffee.

  • Oil does not mix with water. It will float on top of your coffee. While this is largely okay if the coffee is for yourself at home, it is not the best experience to serve a customer in a cafe, hence we created our water soluble, CBD Coffee Drops.
  • Paper cups can easily absorb the floating oil before you manage to drink it.
  • Some CBD oils can negatively impact the flavour of your coffee.

3. Adding CBD Infused Honey to Coffee

Another option is to use a CBD infused sweetener, such as a syrup or honey, to add to your pre-made coffee. Like adding oil, you will need to work out how much you need to add in order to meet your desired CBD dosage.

  • Very easy to control dosage
  • Honey dissolves and mixes in well.
  • Honey is a natural sweetener with its own potential, health benefits.

  • There is only so much honey you will want in your coffee, potentially making it harder to reach higher dosages.
  • Not everyone likes a sweet coffee.

CBD Coffee FAQs

How much does CBD coffee cost per cup?

When using CBD oil or CBD honey to make your own CBD infused coffee the cost can vary. There are lots of CBD oils available at different price points, but limited options for CBD honey. We are currently exploring both as viable alternatives to include in our online store.

What we can tell you is the cost per cup of our CBD infused coffee beans, based on our 450g bag is just over £1 or $1.22. Your daily Starbucks or Costa will likely cost more than double.

How much CBD should I put in my coffee?

This depends entirely on you own personal preferences. However, we have tried several different combinations and dosages.

10-15mg is our preferred dose for a really calming cup of coffee. Perfect for a lazy weekend brew.

5-7.5mg is our preferred dose for most weekday mornings. This is because consuming CBD in small dosages has been found to have an energising effect, making it the perfect compliment to a cup of coffee as it is still enough to banish the notorious, coffee jitters.

We found that anything below 5mg was hard to notice and did not negate the negative side effects of caffeine. Please again note, that this is our own anecdotal evidence. Feel free to browse our customer reviews for the opinions of our customers and remember that this is not medical advice.

Can I put CBD oil into coffee?

Yes you can put CBD oil into coffee. The only thing to really note is that the oil will float on top of your coffee unless you use our water soluble, CBD Coffee Drops. This isn’t a huge problem, unless you are drinking out of a paper cup which may absorb the oil before you get a chance to consume it. For more information, scroll up to “adding CBD oil to coffee.”

Will CBD oil make me sleepy?

A lot of consumers, including myself, use CBD oil as a sleep aid and have found it to be hugely beneficial. It appears that CBD helps with sleep in a multitude of ways, reducing anxiety, reducing the time to fall asleep, improving sleep quality and more. What is even more interesting is how CBD works in smaller doses.

CBD as an ‘energiser’

In smaller doses, CBD has been found to stimulate alertness and promote wakefullness while still negating the negative side effects of caffeine. This is one of the reasons our CBD infused coffee beans have earned several 5-star reviews from our customers ,as a small dose of CBD further compliments the energising effects of coffee.
